The municipality of Sveti Križ (lit., Holy Cross) Začretje (6,619 inhabitants in 2001, 868 in the village of the same name) is situated some 20 km north of Zagreb and 10 km south of Krapina.
Željko Heimer, 24 June 2004
The symbols of Sveti Križ Začretje are prescribed by Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Općine Sveti Križ Začretje, adopted on 6 June 2000 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 20 June 2000 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Krapinsko-zagorske županije, No. 6. The new Decision superseded the 1999 Decision. The only
significant change is the dropping of the longish descriptions and the use of simple wording in the description of the symbols, probably after the Ministry approval.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statut Statut Općine Sveti Križ Začretje, adopted on 6 September 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 10 September 2001 in Službeni glasnik Krapinsko-zagorske županije, No. 10a. This is repeated in the current Statutes, Statut Općine Sveti Križ Začretje, adopted on 10 July 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 20 July 2009 in Službeni glasnik Krapinsko-zagorske županije, No. 15 (text).
The flag is prescribed as "in proportions 1:2, white with the coat of arms bordered yellow in the middle."
The flags in actual use (photos) all have the coat of arms bordered with a thick bright red outline. Moreover, the dexter mantle of the helmet, instead of gules and or, is there shown as gules and argent (white).

The coat of arms is described as follows:
In blue a golden/yellow cross and in chief in silver/white a bucket helmet turned to dexter with a golden/yellow crown and mantle: dexter red-golden/yellow, sinister blue-silver/white."
The colour of the helmet is no longer mentioned, but the most notable difference is the colouring oft he mantle in dexter that was previously prescribed red and white and is now red and yellow.

The ceremonial flag of Sveti Križ Začretje (photo, manufacturer's website), is a white gonfalon with a triangular fly ending with a golden fringe containing in the middle the coat of arms topped with the name of the municipality on two arches (SVETI KRIŽ / ZAČRETJE) and below golden ornaments consisting of six wheat stalks and vine branches.
A table flag could be seen, of the same design but square with a fringe at the bottom and without the ornament below the coat of arms.

Flag and arms of Sveti Križ Začretje, 1999-2000 - Images by Željko Heimer, 25 September 2011
The former symbols of Sveti Križ Začretje are prescribed by Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Općine Sveti Križ Začretje, adopted on 30 July 1999 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 11 October 1999 in Službeni glasnik Krapinsko-zagorske županije, No. 13.
The flag is prescribed as follows:
The size of the flag is determined by the ratio of its length to its width, 2:1. The flag of the municipality of Sveti Križ Začretje is made of white silk edged with a golden (yellow) edge [fringe?].
The coat of arms of the municipality is set in the centre of the flag. The size of the coat of arms is by the geometric division set in the centre of the flag and the size of the coat of arms is 0.66 of the flag's width.
The coat of arms (photo) is prescribed as follows:
The description (blazoning) of the coat of arms of the Municipality of Sveti Križ Začretje.
a) Shield of the coat of arms.
The coat of arms of the Municipality of Sveti Križ Začretje is in pointed shield shape. The ratio of the height to width is 1.4:1. The shield is horizontally divided in two parts. The division line is moved towards the top part of the shield (to the height 0.3 of the shield's height) and form a siver (white) chief.
b) Cross.
The lower part of the shield (0.7 of the shield's hieght) is divided (quartered) by a Latin cross (Passion cross) into four blue fields. The cross is the most highlighted part of the shield, symbolizing a part of the place's name and the most characteristic symbol of the Christian religion. The background of the cross is golden (yellow); outllined in black.
c) Chief of the shield.
In the chief of the shield is depicted a tournament helmet with a crown as a symbol of power and invulnerability, in the shape as it is found in the coat of arms of the Vranicani-Dobronović family, the family linked for several centuries with the place's development. The crown is golden (yellow), as are the openings for the eyes - the facial opening. The rest of the helmet is gray with edge ornaments and a chain around the neck with a medalion. Behind the helmet is a mantle as flying ribbons in combinations of red-silver (right field of the chief of the shield) and blue-silver (left field of the chief of the shield).

Flag and arms of Sveti Križ Začretje, 1994-1995 - Images by Željko Heimer, 25 September 2011
The first symbols of Sveti Križ Začretje are prescribed by Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Općine Sveti Križ Začretje, adopted on 23 August 1994 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 31 December 1994 in Službeni glasnik Županije Krapinsko-zagorske, No. 31.
The flag is prescribed as follows:
The size of the flag determines the ratio of the length to the width of the flag being 1.6:1. The flag of the Municipality of Sveti Križ Začretje is made of white silk bordered with a golden (yellow) edge. The bottom narrower part of the flag is ornamented with a golden (yellow) fringe. The coat of arms of the municipality begins at the top fifth of the height (1/5 or 0.2 of the height). Left and right of the coat of arms is an empty space 1/4 or 0.25 of the flag's width. The coat of arms is 2/4 or 0.5 of the flag's width wide. The ratio of the coat of arms is described in the size of the coat of arms [sic!] (1.25:1). Semicircularly under the coat of arms with blue letters is inscribed the name of the place - Sveti Križ Začretje. (The height of the capital letters is 1/6 of the coat of arms' height).
The coat of arms is prescribed as follows:
Shield.
The coat of arms of the Municipality of Sveti Križ Začretje has a semicircular shield (height to width ratio, 1.25:1) edged with a golden outline.
The shield is quartered with a Latin cross (Passion cross) into four blue fields. The horizontal beam of the cross divides the vertical beam in the top third (the top is shorter).
Cross.
The cross is the most prominent part of the shield and the most characteristic symbol of the Christian religion, while it also symbolizes the name of the place. The background of the cross is golden (yellow) ornamented with the Croatian wattle ornament (black).
Right top field.
From the bottom of the field raises a part of the historical Croatian coat of arms (10 red - silver (white) squares), symbolizing the state affiliation of the municipality to the Republic of Croatia. Above the Croatian arms is a golden nobleman crown with five points with a ball atop each. In the base of the golden ring of the crown, it is ornamented with seven precious stones. The crown symbolizes the connection of the place with the nobility forming the history and development of the place.
Left top field.
In the left top field is depicted the dome of the Vranicany* (silver - (white) colour). The Vranicany castle is one of the central points of the place and was for quite some time the traditional symbol of Sveti Križ Začretje. In the top right corner of the field is a golden (yellow) six-pointed star - the Morning Star, planet Venus (beside the moon the most prominent object in the evening sky) and it is the part of many of the Croatian civic coats of arms. Beneath the dome is a white (silver) Croatian (point being narrowed) sabre as the symbol of knighthood, decisivness, consistency and justice.
Right bottom field.
In the right bottom field is depicted a plough with a ploughshare making a ridge (wheel yellow, appliance white (silver)) symbolizing the agriculture, the age-long land work, cattle breeding, vineyards of the people of the region, and a symbol of diligence and endurance. The plough is also a part of the seal of the Municipality of Sveti Križ Začretje on a document dated 15 July 1841.
Left bottom field.
The raising sun with rays (coloured yellow) symbolizes birth, life, light, optimism, joy, tourism, future and eternal duration. The sun rays enlight a Zagroje landscape (configuration black, landscape green).
Base of the shield.
The right and left bottom fields are crossed with an arch in the colours of the Croatian flag - the tricolour (red, white and blue), also being composition of an overpass (upper part - road) symbolizing the traffic connections and openness to the world, tourism and, generally, economic prosperity. The overpass is gray with two arches on each side of the lower cross beam (the colours of the landscapes from the bottom right and left fields).
*Although the names of old Croatian noble families are regularly found in various spelling, I believe that the standard forms should be Vranyczany or Vranjican, and that the above version was not used by the family.
