Flag of the Požega-Slavonia County

The symbols of the Požega-Slavonia County are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Županije Požeško-slavonske, adopted on 5 July 1994 by the County Assembly and published on 7 July 1994 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Županije Požeško-slavonske, No. 5. The material used for the preparation of the Decision was kindly supplied from the County Archives by Mrs. Branka Starčević Tesari, Secretary of the County Administration on 20 October 2005.
The Decision was slightly amended by Odluka izmjenama i dopunama Odluke o grbu i zastavi Županije Požeško-slavonske, adopted on 29 June 1996 by the County Assembly and published in Požeško-slavonske službeni glasnik.
The symbols are described in the County's consolidated Statutes Statut Požeško-slavonske županije (pročišćeni tekst), adopted on 12 February 2010 by the County Assembly and published on 13 February 2010 in Požeško-slavonske službeni glasnik, No. 2 (text).

The flag is horizontally divided green-yellow-greeen with the central stripe being double in width of each other two and the County's coat of arms in the middle.
On flags in actual use (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo), the height of the coat of arms is slightly smaller than the width of the yellow stripe, leaving a small gap between the arms and the green stripes. This pattern repeats consistently in the County, so it must be on purpose However, the relative width of the stripes themselves and the height of the coat of arms is nowhere explicitly precisely defined in the prescriptions, which do not include any drawing.

The modern design of the coat of arms of the Požega-Slavonia County, based on the historical muster, was performed by Frane Paro, an academic painter and a graphic artist from Zagreb and a professor at the Zagreb Academy of Fine Arts. The coat of arms is: "Per fess, in chief azure two lions rampant regardant or, the dexter holding a sword argent topped with a crown or and the sinister holding a sceptre or topped with a crown or from which is folding around the sceptre a shroud gules, and in base vert, between two barrulets wavy argent a marten passant proper."
The coat of arms of the Požega-Slavonia County is the same as the shield of the coat of arms of the former Požega County, granted on 26 February 1748 by Empress Maria Theresa. The lower part is obviously a variation of the coat of arms of Slavonia.

Željko Heimer, 29 October 2005

Imre Csáki shows in A magyar királyság vármegyéinek cimerei a XVIII-XIX. században (Corvina, Budapest, 1995) all the coats of arms of the Counties of the Hungarian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 18th-19th centuries. The coat of arms of the former Požega County (Hungarian, Pozsega vármegye) was: A cartouche shield, divided per fess: 1. Azure two lions or affronty fighting each other with swords, the dexter one holding a sword argent and or with a royal crown or at the top, the sinister one holding a sword or with a ribbon gules along the sword and a royal crown or at the top, 2. Tierced per fess, a. Divided per fess, A. Azure, B. Sable a fess wavy argent, b. Vert a marten courant proper, c. Divided per fess, A. Sable a fess wavy argent, B. Azure. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown or. The coat of arms was adopted first in 1748.
More simply, the upper part of the shield shows on blue two lions fighting with swords, then the lower part whows fives stripes (1:1:2:1:1), alternatively, blue, black with a wavy line in white, green with a marten, black with a wavy line in white and blue.

Pascal Vagnat, 28 June 1998
