Flag of Komiža

The symbols of Komiža are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Komiža, adopted on 11 May 1995 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 18 May 1995 in the Municipality official gazette Službeni glasnik Općine Komiža, No. 3.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka, and approved by the Ministry of Administration / Central State Office for Administration before 2006.

The flag is described in Article 2 of the Decision, as follows:

The flag of the municipality of Komiža is monocoloured - in colour of old gold, charged in the centre with the coat of arms of the municipality of Komiža, in proportions 1:2 (width to length).

Former symbols of Komiža

The former symbols of Komiža were described in Article 5 of the first Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Komiža, adopted on 31 March 1994 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 5 April 1994 in Službeni glasnik Općine Komiža, No. 4, as follows:

The coat of arms of the municipality of Komiža is the historical coat of arms of Komiža with the figure of St. Nicolas, patron of sailors, fishermen and travelers, and of the town of Komiža.
The flag of the municipality of Komiža is the Croatian tricolour that has in the centre, instead of the coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia, the coat of arms of the municipality of Komiža.

Thus the historical arms were adopted immediately. The flag was adopted in the old tradition of municipal flags in Dalmatia from the second half of 19th century - when numerous communities apparently adopted such designs to highlight their Croatian heritage. However, I am not sure if Komiža indeed had such an historical flag.
Obviously the central authorities would not approve such tricolour, and eventually Komiža adopted the yellow flag. I am not quite sure if the 1994 Statutes already meant the same design of the coat of arms as the current one, but even if it was somewhat different, it must have been rather similar. Therefore I tentatively reconstruct the first 1994 prescribed flag using the current coat of arms.
