Flag of Split

The flag of Split, as presented on the municipal website (with construction details), is blue, with a shade gradient from darker to lighter from bottom to top, with the white emblem of the town in the lower half, consisting of six words "SPLIT" forming the silhouette of Diocletian's palace and the St. Dujam Cathedral belfry topped with a cross.

The flag, obviously, came into use after the flag celebrating the 1700 anniversary of the town, which had been de facto the flag of the town during the second half of the 1990s and a bit later, was gradually obsolete, by simply replacing numeral "1700" in the design with yet another word "SPLIT".
I have not found any indication that this flag was formally adopted, although it may have been.

Coat of arms of Split

[Town coat of arms] image by Željko Heimer, 11 April 2009

The coat of arms pictures in a rectangular shield the part of the northern walls of the Diocletian's palace, as it was in the Middle Ages, and in the middle above the walls the belfry of the cathedral. In the upper corners are two shields, dexter the historical coat of arms of Croatia and sinister a shield picturing the town's patron, St. Dujam. The coat of arms is bordered with Gothic rectangles.
The oldest confirmation that Split used the rectangular coat of arms are dated to the early 14th century. Stonecuttings are preserved from the 14th and 15th centuries, showing the same coat of arms with the shields around the belfry, at any time showed the central rulers to which Split was paying allegiance. Later on the coats of arms of the town were also used without these shields, and at different times in different shapes. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the coat of arms was sometimes shaped as a classical heraldic shield, as a rule without the shields around the belfry. After the World War II the coat of arms was not used any more until 1969, when the new design of the coat of arms was adopted, with Socialist emblems, which was replaced in 1991 with St. Dujam's image.

In 1969, a new design of the coat of arms was adopted, with Socialist emblems, which was replaced in 1991 with St. Dujam's image. The official descriptions were changed slightly in 1974 and 1978, but that did not affect the drawing.

Split's 1700th anniversary flag

[Town flag] image by Željko Heimer, 9 October 2001

The 1700th anniversary of the town was celebrated in 1996, but the actual celebrations begun in the early 1990s and lasted much after 1996.
The anniversary flag is vertical, blue with the white logo of the event, which shows the silhouette of Diocletian's palace with the characteristic tower of the St. Dujam cathedral. The core of Split emerged around Diocletian's palace and the cathedral, dedicated to the town's patron saint, killed by Diocletian, was built over the Emperor's mausoleum. The emblem is formed by numeral "1700" and multiple words "SPLIT" topped with a cross.

Historical flag of Split, 1882

[Town flag]         [Town arms]  images by Željko Heimer, 19 October 2013

In the election held on 9 November 1882, the (Croatian) People's Party won for the first time; on 22 November the Croatian tricolor with the historical coat of arms (Azure the Diocletian's palace with belfry argent, the shield surrounded with a rich golden cartouche) of the town was hoisted on the "standard" at Hrvoje's tower. In accordance with the tradition of Adriatic and Mediterranean towns, there is always an "official" flag pole, called "standard" (in Split, štandarc), from which the official flag is hoisted, being usually the town's flag).
The historical flag (page no longer available) is preserved in the Town Museum.
