Presentation of Pag

The Town of Pag (3,846 inhabitants in 2011, 2,849 in the town of Pag) is located in the southern half of the island of the same name, close to the cast parallel to the Velebit mountain range, about 30 km north of Zadar. The teritorial unit was part of the Lika-Senj County until 1997 as a Municipality; in 1997 it was granted the status of Town and transferred to Zadar County.

Flag of Pag

The symbols of Pag are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Paga, adopted on 11 November 1997 by the Town Assembly and published in December 1997 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije, No. 5.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is prescribed in Article 9 of the Decision as follows:

The flag of the Town of Pag is coloured Bordeaux red and in its middle is the coat of arms of the Town of Pag, bordered in golden yellow, in accordance with the design described in Article 6 of this Decision.
The ratio of the length to the width of the flag is 2 m x 1 m. The height of the coat of arms in the flag is 2/3 of the flag's width.

The coat of arms is prescribed in Article 6 of the Decision as follows:

The coat of arms of the Town of Pag is the historical coat of arms of Pag with the figure of St. George, the patron saint of the Town of Pag.
The coat of arms is in a semi-circular shield shape coloured blue, in its central part the figure of St. George on a rearing white (silver) horse, armoured white (silver) and with an oval shield in his left hand. In the oval shield is a silver cross on a red field, and in his raised right hand he holds a spear with a golden handle and silver spearhead. With the lowered left hand he holds the central part of the spear piercing a laying green dragon with golden wings and armed red.

Compared with the previous design, the spear is coloured and there is no more mention of the crown(s).

The ceremonial flag is described in Article 10 of the Decision as follows:

Exceptionally, for ceremonial occasions (Town's Day, important anniversaries, ceremonial sessions) one may use the flag of the Town produced in the mode of medieval gonfalons (ceremonial Town flag).
The gonfalon is produced in accordance to the design. [sic]
The gonfalon is 160 cm x 80 cm in size, made of Bordeaux red coloured Atlas silk. It is edged with a golden ribbon. At the bottom it has three tails and at the top five ribbons for the bar. The bottom of the tails is ornamented with a golden fringe. In the centre of the gonfalon is the coat of arms of the Town edged with a golden ribbon. Above the coat of arms is semi-circularly inscribed with golden letters "GRAD PAG".
In the tails of the gonfalon are golden ornaments with sage motives. The hoisting, carrying and display kit consists of a braze staff, golden cordon with ornamental tassels and brazen ring, brazen carrying staff 2.8 m long and unique forged massive iron base, coloured golden.

Symbols of Pag prescribed in the current Town Statutes

Articles 7 to 10 of the Town Statutes Statut Grada Paga, adopted on 27 September 2001 by the Town Assembly and published on 10 October 2001 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije, No. 7, prescribe a weird combination of the two previous designs; the coat of arms from the 1997 Statutes is retained (black spear, four flames from the mouth etc.), but there is no more mention of any crown. The flag is described as red with the coat of arms (as in both the 1997 Statutes and 1997 Decision, each with a slightly different coat of arms). The ceremonial flag is also included as per the 1997 Decision, but with a different coat of arms.
This was repeated in the 2009 statutes Statut Grada Paga (text), adopted on 28 July 2009 and published in Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije. However, it appears that the town uses nevertheless the set of symbols prescribed by the 1997 Decision. The municipal website actually shows photos and drawing of those symbols.

Slightly different symbols are described in Article 5 of the Town Statutes Statut Grada Paga, adopted on 20 June 1997 and published in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije, No. 3, as follows:

The coat of arms of the town is the historical coat of arms with the figure of St. George, the patron saint of the Town of Pag. The coat of arms is in a semi-circular shield shape coloured blue and in its central field it depicts the figure of St. George on a white horse, turned-faced. With the raised right hand he holds the top, and with the lowered left hand the central part of a black spear with which he pierces a dragon. On his left shoulder a red shield with a white cross is hanging. On his head there is a white helmet, and he sits on a red saddle. The horse is rearing above a green dragon with golden wings, from its mouth four red flames are issuing. The shield of the arms is ornamented with a masoned crown into which is set a stylized leafy crown coloured golden with a string of pearls. Both crowns are golden.
The flag of the Town is dark red and in its centre is the coat of arms of the Town.

Article 6 prescribes the use of the coat of arms on seals while Article 7 prescribed a separate Decision to provide a more detailed description of the coat of arms and the flag, their use and protection, and separate depictions of these to be added to the Decision.
