Presentation of Kloštar Ivanić

The municipality of Kloštar Ivanić (6,038 inhabitants in 2001, 3,597 in the town of Kloštar Ivanić) originates in a place granted in the late 11th century to the young Diocese of Zagreb by the Ladislas I, King of Hungary and Croatia. A diocesian court was built there, soon supplemented by a monastery.
In the 13th century the place was grated the status of Free Marketplace (oppidium). A new church and monastery were built in the 16th century for the Franciscan monks. Until 1703 the place was part of the Military Border, initially under direct royal control and later under the command of the Ban of Croatia. Together with Križ amd Ivanić-Grad, Kloštar Ivanić formed a strong system of fortification against the Ottomans, known together as the Island of Ivanić (Otok Ivanić).

The coat of arms of Kloštar Ivanić is in blue on a green hill a golden covered well of a well, above on the right a golden double cross, on the left a golden Latin cross. The well in the coat of arms is a depiction of a well made during the Military Border, which still stands in the center of the settlement. The double cross symbolizes the Franciscan monastery and the church of St. John the Baptist, and the Latin cross the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kloštar Ivanić.

The symbols of Kloštar Ivanić are prescribed by Decision Odluka o općinskom grbu i zastavi (Općine Kloštar Ivanić), adopted on 6 June 1997 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 16 July 1997 in the Zagreb County official gazette Glasnik Zagrebačke Županije, No. 6.

The flag is described in the Decision, as "green", without mentioning the coat of arms (which is odd).

The coat of arms (image) is described as a white shield with the six-coloured depiction of a belfry, a part of an abbey, a "central well", a wheat ear, a bunch of grapes, a book and an Aesculapian staff, as a symbol of pharmacy.
The belfry has been used used as the origin point for the land survey of the Croatian-Slavonian Kingdom since 1817. phhe farmacy has been recorded in the monastery at least in 1670. The "central well" is an unusual structure standing in the centre of the place from the period of the Military Border. The book represents the mid-18th century Book of Miracles of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Ivanić, a manuscript recording the events and popular beliefs in the area. Although the Decision mentions "a wheat ear", two ears are depicted as well as a blue bunch of grapes with two leaves, reflecting the local crops.
