The municipality of Rakovec is located 35 km northeast of Zagreb, half way between the towns of Sveti Ivan Zelina and Vrbovec. It has about 1,350 inhabitants in as much as 12 settlements, with only 245 inhabitants in the village of the same name.

Flag of Rakovec

The symbols of Rakovec were adopted on 6 December 2007 by the Municipality Assembly (personal communication by Mayor Branko Herček). They are yet to be confirmed by the central authorities.

The symbols were designed by the Grip d.o.o. company, from Zagreb.

The flag is dark red with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.
It is said that the flag should have the staff at the right (sinister-hoisted). It may well be just a misunderstanding, although the design of the horseman would surely justify such an arrangement.

The coat of arms of Rakovec is: "Quarterly gules and or, in the first St. George killing the dragon argent and in the fourth ruins of a tower also argent."
St. George is the patron saint of the municipality, the ruins represent the ruins of the old town of the same name above the modern settlement. The red color in the shield represents the martyrdom of St. George, while the golden color represents the Royal estate of Rakovec.

The ceremonial flag is a dark red gonfalon ending triangularly with a golden fringe, with the coat of arms in the middle, the name of the municipality on two lines above it and a wreath of oak and wheat ear in the base. The table flag is of the same design but without the rectangular indentations along the top edge.
