Overview

Nagytevel (in German Deutschtewel) is a village in Veszprém County in Hungary near to the town of Pápa (11 km east) in the Little Plains. The village has got 570 inhabitants (1990 census), approximately 40% German (data from Mr. Babits, leader of the German Ethnic Council). One of the Official Ethnic Minorities of Hungary has got ethnic council in the village: Germans. Neighbouring settlements are: Bakonyjákó (Jaka), Homokbodöge , Adásztevel villages and Pápa town.
The first mention of the settlement is from 1422, settlers of the village were serves of the Abbey of Zirc and members of the lower nobility. At the time of the Turkish wars the settlement was devastated 1566-1718. Nagy-Tevel was resettled with Silezians, Franks, Moravians and Croatians in 1718. In 1910 Nagytevel was a village in the Pápa district of Veszprém County. Number of its inhabitants in 1910: 920; 797 (86,6%) German, 123 (13,4%) Hungarian by mother tongue, 912 (99,1%) Roman Catholic and 8 (0,9%) other by religion. After the WWII most of the Germans were deported to Germany and Hungarians deported from Czechoslovakia settled to the village. The coat of arms and the flag were adopted in 1995.
