Description of the flag

Second from left on this Flag Wall is the flag of Naas, Kildare county capital, Ireland: http://www.omahasistercities.com/flagwallpix/29.html. Horizontally divided light blue-white-light blue, with the arms in the centre - see Ralf Hartemink’s site: http://www.ngw.nl/int/ier/n/naas.htm

But for the shield ornaments – green instead of silver - the Omaha version follows above version, more resembling a seal of course. The gold snake on silver field is shown but also mentioned in the motto (Prudens ut Serpens i.e. The Wisdom of the Snake), and inevitably there are some colourful legends about it - here, for instance – almost at end of page “Naas motif goes back to Moses?”: http://kildare.ie/knn/newsweekjan3099.htm

And a sacred snake-bearing (serpentiferous?) flag is shown on a picture, somewhat larger if you follow the link in that short article. The old Kildare County Council flag does contain the arms.

I also came across the following historical item: http://kildare.ie/knn/naasflag060601.htm
"Historic flag returned to Naas Town Hall" (NAAS: 6 June 2001: by Trish Whelan)
The article reports on a historic flag stolen from Naas in 1919 and now returned. The green embroidered flag was previously owned by the Irish Volunteers, and was presented to the UDC. Another article by Mario Corrigan with detailed b/w photo and information on the banner's presentation (1914) can be found at http://www.kildare.ie/library/ehistory/2008/02/naas_irish_national_volunteer.asp.
