Overview

Following the info about the flag of the Portuguese Equestrian Federation, here you have the flag of the International Equestrian Federation, the body that, according to it's website at http://www.horsesport.org:

"The FEI is the international governing body of Equestrian sport recognised by the International Olympic Committee. It is the organisation, which establishes rules and regulations for the conduct of international equestrian events in the Jumping, Dressage, Eventing, Driving, Vaulting and Endurance Riding disciplines. This includes the supervision and maintenance of the health and welfare of the horses taking part as well as the respect of the principles of horsemanship.

The FEI was founded in 1921 and is based in Lausanne, Switzerland since 1991. It today counts some 130 member countries."

There's a full list of members here: FEI members. It might be used by someone interested to dig up flag info about other countries.

The FEI, apparently using French as primary language, missed the opportunity of adopting a great flag, using the inner elements of it's logo. It's true I didn't go through the whole site, but I was unable to find info on the flag or the logo. I did, however, take a picture of it's flag in a class A tournament that takes place every September right here in town. It's a white bed-sheet with a large symbol in its center. The symbol consists of a field composed of triangles in the Olympic colours bordered by a horseshoe-shaped bordure, in light brown. Over the triangles there's a picture of St George slaying the dragon, all white, with black lines. On the bordure, the name of the institution, in French, appears in black caps.

No idea on the meaning of this symbol, and I guess it survives due to history. Today, there'd be no possibility that a world federation would have chosen such an Eurocentric symbol...

Description of the flag

I guess St. George must be the oldest well known equestrian. In Andreas Herzfeld's book "Flags and Logos of International Sports Federations, Associations and Organizations", the colors are defined as:

  • Green pantone 355
  • Blue pantone 3005
  • Red pantone 192
  • Yellow pantone 137
  • Gold and black, included but not defined in pantone specifications.

I see this white flag with the logo everyday this week , as it's flying near my house, at the Spanish Open being held in Gijon until next Monday.
