Today's NY Times reports a demonstration of Italian Unions.
Accompanying the article is a photo of a crowd in Rome,
brandishing brandishing CGIL
banners (the former communist labor federation).

The red flags with CGIL and other inscriptions in white or
yellow would seem to belong to the Confederazione Generale
Italiana del Lavore, the Italian General Confederation of Labor.

Here is the flag of the trade union CGIL, the most important
and with more members of Italy. The initials, down on the right
side, are the european and world trade union confederations. The
colors in the left-top corner are (with the color of the
background) the italian colors.

The "support pennant" shows a "W", which
probably should be rather a "double V" (not a
"double U"), namely the Italian abbreviation for
"Viva" ("Live!"), which is frequently shown
by a double V, not adjacent to each other (like in a
"W"), but slightly overlapping.

Previous Flag

Previous Flag - variant
CGIL has also regional flags. Usually the regional flags are
similar at the national flag with the name of the region. In my
Region (Trentino Alto-Adige), my province (Alto Adige) has two
official languages: Italian and German. For that reason our flag
is different. In the flag, Alto-Adige is the Italian name of the
province and Sudtirol is the name in German. The initials AGB
mean Autonomer Gewerkschafts-bund (Autonomous Trade Union). I
know that it is not the translation of the Italian name but
however it's so. The colors in the corner are the european union
colors. Below it is the former flag of CGIL of my province.
