Overview

A blue flag with a golden eagle is the old flag of Patriarchate of Aquileia (circa 1000-1420) and a flag for Friuli. It is also possible to see a blue flag with the golden eagle and, near the hoist, vertically placed, the word Friul in yellow
Mario Fabretto, 20 September 1996

The gonfalon and the coat of arms were adopted on the 8th December 1967. The coat of arms is azure an eagle taking flight or on a mural crown argent. The gonfalon is blue with the coat of arms in the middle and the words Regione autonoma Friuli-Venezia Giulia in gold. The flag  is blue with the coat of arms in the middle and was adopted on the 27th November 2001. The region issued a decree concerning the use of the coat of arms and the gonfalon on the 5th March 1970. The region has also a car flag (guidoncini) for the authorities of the region. This last is blue with the coat of arms.

I've been to Friuli this September. The flag of the region (eagle on mural crown), with added inscription "FRIUL" probably does not exist. The official flag is really an official flag, and it is not used by the citizens (-S-/---). What Mario Fabretto describes, is a flag with a different eagle, which we have at Padanian flag of Friuli. This flag is actually the widely used as unofficial civil flag (C--/---) of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. The variant with the inscription (see Flag in Use) can be seen as well, but less frequently.
M. Schmöger, 22 November 2002

The versions which are in this page are the less used in Friuli. The flag in common use is that Padanian flag of Friuli. This is claimed by Padanian movement, but it's used by everyone who supports friulian autonomists. On the other hand, I've never seen the version with the Friul word on the left (see: Flag in Use (?)), neither those with the yellow-blue bands (see: Friuli Nationalist Flags), although these are for sure Friuli's colours. I want also to report that Friulian flag with the eagle flies every year on 3rd April for the so-called 'Patrie dal Friûl', a festival that remembers the creation of the first Friulian state (the Patriarchate of Aquileia).

The nationalist movement in Friuli was hoisted a flag blue, yellow blue horizontal. This information have for source Vexilla Catalana, December 1985, numer 2.
Jaume Ollé, 8 September 1996

There isn't any true nationalist movement in Friuli. You have better speak of autonomous movements which would separate Friuli from Trieste. The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region was created after the WWII incorporating the province of Udine (friulan) and the provinces of Gorizia and Triest, which, before, together with Zara, Pola and later Lubiana (I use the Italian names for Zadar, Pula and Ljubljana) constituted the Venezia Giulia region. So the today composed name. Because Friulans identify themselves as a Ladin nation, they would like to have more autonomy from the regional government which has its seat in Trieste. Actually very few people think to separate Udine (and Pordenone, which province was created in the sixties) from the rest of the region, and Friulan nationalism is mostly a cultural movement than a political one. The blue-yellow-blue flag is almost completely unknown to population. The colors are indeed Friulan, originating in the ancient standard of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, and they appear on the provincial flags of Udine and Gorizia, on the regional flag and on many civic flags. Sometimes a yellow five pointed star was added in the canton on the blue stripe, but I never saw such flags flown by people. On the contrary the light blue flag with the golden Patriarchate eagle is widely exposed everywhere in Friuli, often with a "Friul" vertically placed toward the hoist (see Flag in Use).
Mario Fabretto, 8 October 1996

The Friolano language is represented by a horizontal yellow-blue bicolor at www.sci.uniud.it/~righini and by horizontal yellow-blue bicolor with a eagle at www.infotech.it/faedis.
Dov Gutterman , 4 September 1999

Vexilla Catalana issue 2 reported Flag of Friuli nationalist B-Y-B horizontal. Seems that Y-B are the colors of Friule
Jaume Ollé , 6 September 1999

This first flag is listed under number 45 at the chart "Flags of Aspirant Peoples" [eba94] as Friuli (Friuls, Furlanians) - North-East Italy flag.
Ivan Sache, 9 September 1999

This flag has an incorrect description. This flag was proposed in 1966 by Giorgio  Jus (that, by the way, was one of leader of a regional party called "Movimento Friuli") as an easier alternative to the golden Eagle ("Acuile") for a new popular flag of Friuli. Nowadays is used only as a "ferial" flag, because for the solemnity the Eagle is preferred. The proportions are 2x3.
Matteo Colaone, 26 September 2000

Friulan call themselves "Furlans", in Italian "Friulani". Their language is the "Furlan", in Italian "Friulano".

"Cjargne" Flag

image by Ivan Sache, 11 May 2020, based on www.cjargne.it

As far as I can understand there is movement for formation a new autonomous province of Carnia/Cjargne in todays Province of Udine in the Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy. It should comprise the Communes of Tolmezzo, Sauris, Forni di Sopra, Arta Terme, Forni Avoltri and Ravascletto.
