City Flag

The city emblem was adopted on September 5th 1933 by the City Notice No 109 but no flag law. The dark purplish blue flag charged with white city emblem in the center. The flag proportions are 2:3.
The city emblem is stylized kanji SEN 仙 inspired by the former local lord the Dates family crest of three stripes in a circle.

The Sendai Mayor;s flag was adopted on May 17th 1994 by the City Regulation No 47.
It is a white flag with one black and one red horizontal stripes and office in black. The flag proportions are 73:100.

The Sendai Fire Dept flag was adopted on May 17th 1994 by City Regulation No 47.
A purple flag charged with the white Fire Dept emblem composed of stylized kanji SEN 仙 Sendai city emblem: a snow crystal, hose pipe and its gun , plume of water and sunrays in the center with five white horizontal stripes. The flag proportions are 17:25

Sendai City wards (ku)

Sendai City has five ku (wards):

Aoba-ku 青葉区

Population: 281,218 as of Oct 2005, Area: 301km2
The center of Sendai developed as a castle town during the Edo Period. Aoba-ku is not only considered the heart of Sendai, but also the center of the Tohoku region. National, Prefectural and Municipal administrative offices, local finance agencies, businesses, department stores, and various markets are located in this area, which attracts many people for work and shopping. Aoba-ku is also known as an academic zone with numerous universities, colleges, and research institutions. There are also many cultural facilities, such as museums and art galleries. The western part of the ward has been developed into a large housing area. In addition, the valleys of the upper Hirose River, the Sakunami Hot Springs, and Jogi Nyorai are familiar natural resorts.

The ward symbol mark was adopted in Feb 1999 but no flag law.
The white flag charged with the ward symbol mark of green and greenish blue in the center. The flag proportion 2 : 3.
The mark is a stylized A and the silhouette of the green leaves incorporated inside. The basic color green stands for the vitality, growth and progress of the browse and the blue inside for the limpid stream of the Hirosegawa river and the essence of life, water. As a whole, it represents the future of Aoba ward of bright hope and with rich nature.

Taihaku-ku 太白区

Population: 222,447 as of oct 2005 Area: 230km2
The name `Taihaku` originates from the Mt. Taihaku, the legendary mountain that Venus became when she fell. Nagamachi, the center of the western part of the ward, is the main terminal link for transportation networks and will  continue to develop. In 1999, the Taihaku Cultural Center was opened and the Nagamachi Sub-Central City readjustment planning has also been proceeding. Akiu is the source of the Natori River, which runs through the ward. The district also has surrounding mountains with beautiful natural formations, such as the Banzi Cliff and the Akiu Water Fall. Folk dancing to pray for a good harvest during the rice-planting season is a cultural tradition that has been handed down through the generations.  There are many historical sites in Taihaku, such as the Koriyama Ruins and the Tomizawa Site Museum.

The ward mark is a stylized hiragana た TA. The upper part of the green color stands for the young bud, while the lower part for Mt. Taihaku¡Çs line which represents rich and vibrant nature. The orange color symbolizes the passion and the harmony of the ward people.

Wakabayashi-ku 若林区

Population: 129,942 as of oct 2005 Area: 50km2
In the western part of the Wakabayashi (Renbo, Aramachi, and Kawaramachi), the historical old streets tell of the town division during the feudal age. The northern area, around Oroshimachi, is considered the center of commerce in the Tohoku region. This includes the Wholesale Business Center and the Central Wholesale Market. The Rokugo and Shichigo areas, located in the southeastern part of the ward, are largely used for farming and agriculture. The  shoreline area is a beautiful, natural landscape with black pine trees and untouched sandy beaches.

The mark is a stylized W in white curve in the green oval. The oval and the curve symbolize the development and jumping into the future. The W and a round point above it make the figure of a person who opens both hands which is an image of the city where nature and the people coexist and develop.

Miyagino-ku 宮城野区

Population: 182,678 as of Oct 2005 Area: 62 km2
Since long ago, `Miyagino` has been highly praised and written about in famous poetry. The ward has changed due to a large developmental project of housing estates and land adjustment. Transport and warehousing companies have a large presence in the Hinodemachi, Ogimachi and Nigatake areas because of the easy accessibility to the highways. These companies, in addition to the large factories located around Sendai Port, represent the main industries of the city.

The ward symbol mark was adopted on Mar 11th 1994 but no flag law.
The white flag charged with the ward symbol mark of blue and white in the center. The flag proportion 2: 3.
The mark is a stylized M in Japanese bush clover and yacht form which represents Miyagino ward is advancing rapidly. The mark color blue symbolizes sea.

Izumi-ku 泉区

Population: 208,813 as of Oct 2005 Area: 145km2
The Nanakita River runs through the center of the ward from Mt. Izumigatake to the east. During the Edo Period, Izumi prospered as the lodging town located on the Oshu Highway. On the hills around the town, many temples and historical sites remain. Old traditions and heritages, such as the Deer Dance from the Fukuoka area, have been handed down through the generations. Since the 1960's, Izumi has had a rapidly growing residential area. Through city planning, Izumi continues to develop as the northern sub-central part of Sendai. Accumulation of a frontier industry is achived as a position to which new development of the city industry is led, and the northern part area also aims at accumulation of a research-and development function or a new industry creation support function.

The ward symbol mark was adopted in Feb 2007 but no flag law.
The white flag charged with the green ward symbol mark in the center. The flag proportion 2 : 3.
The mark is a stylized kanji 泉 IZUMI. The arrow in upper part indicates the ward is located in the north of Sendai City and the antenna tower represents the proposal of making town from the spring. The green color stands for the nature of Izumi-ku.
