Background

Kakamega County is located in western Kenya in what was formerly Western Province. The capital and largest town is Kakamega.

Description of the flag

The county flag is divided horizontally into green, white (fimbriated black) and gold stripes with the county emblem in the centre.

The County flag is described in the Kakamega County Flag, Emblems and Names Bill (November 2014) as follows:

PART 1

1. The County Flag

COLORS:

Green: for nature, growth, stability and ambience whilst symbolizing the agricultural potential for the county which is the back bone of the County’s economy including other natural resources, are usually alleged "GREEN JEWEL".

White: for safety and purity in the County whilst symbolizing peace, harmony and co-existence of the residence of Kakamega County.

Golden: for wealth and passion whilst depicting both Natural and Human Resources.

COAT OF ARMS BRIEF

Armiger - COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF KAKAMEGA.

Shield - the shield concept is a traditional elongated Luhya shield made of hide, with its functional importance of protecting the whole body to the user, the elements of accommodation in the concept are arranged horizontally on two fields and are distinguished with its background colours and the elements indeed represents the day to day encounter in the County context.

The top green background depicts abundance, hope and joy, it accommodates the rock of Ilesi a well known landmark feature to identify County, and the field has Kakamega forest on its background the most bustling forest in the County. The watch in the middle represents the 12 Sub Counties and 60 Wards respectively, whilst its major role is to organize element and champions the spirit of precise. The white background depicts peace and purity, it accommodates sugarcane stalk bowed in counter an economic activity of its people with cuts each representing 12 Sub Counties while it supports the Luhya traditional Pottery and Isukuti artifacts.

Supporters - the shield on Dexter is supported by a bold energetic male African man dressed on grey top with folded sleeves, golden trouser, watch and holding on tea seedling and traditional Luhya Spear crossing at shield centre. At the sinister side is a beautiful female African lady dressed in golden bracelets, watch at her arms, white top and golden kitenge whilst
carrying her Agricultural wares on her traditional Luhya reed basket and supporting the shield.

Compartment - the base has green lawn depicting the County jurisdiction and the golden scroll band inscribed the thriving motto of "GREEN JEWEL".

BLAZONING

ARMIGER - COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF KAKAMEGA.

Escutcheon - Party per fess traditional Luhya shield on Sable, border. Vert; Argent, fesswise castle atop rock of Ilesi, Sable, is Kakamega forest. Or; Argent, horizontal bracelet token watch band. Argent; Or, embowed sugarcane stalk on counter and bendwise Luhya traditional ornamented clay pottery and wooden drum with fimbriated leather thong handle.

Supporters - Argent, Sable Luhya traditional Spear crossing behind shield, Sable, Argent, Or, bold African man holding on botany and supporting Spear on Dexter. Sable, Argent, Or, on sinister is a beautiful African woman carrying Luhya traditional reeds basket with agricultural endeavours and supporting shield.

Compartment - Vert; Or; Sable, circular base scroll inscribed motto "GREEN JEWEL".
