Overview

Flag and coat of arms of Kazlu Ruda (Marijampole county -  Marijampoles apskritis). The flag is according to my personal observation from the flag show of Mindaugas coronation 750th anniversary. The coat of arms is drawn according to image from the book: The Heraldry of Lithuania.

Kazlu Ruda - on yellow field the arms of Kazlu Ruda: on black field sinister bendwise six golden 6-pointed stars between two silver antlers of roebuck. Flag proportions 10:13, free edges bordered with tight silver strip, fringe is silver, finial is wooden knob. The arms reflects the establishment and name of town. In 1737 the first homestead is mentioned in local woods: the family of tar-maker and charcoal-burner Kazla, hence a Lithuanian surname (modern form Kazlas), originating from Polish "koziol" (meaning "goat"). His 6 sons implemented the new business: they started exploiting the local pools of swamp ore and became good smiths. Therefore the settlement got name Kazlu Ruda (literally "Kazlas' Ore", meaning "Kazlas' Foundry"). The black field of arms means tar and charcoal, the 6 stars mean sparks flying from iron forged by 6 brothers, and the antlers symbolize both the location of town in woods and the surname Kazlas: in many Lithuanian dialects there roe is called "wood goat".
