The National Heraldic Commission of Moldova registered the municipal flag of Chişinău on September 28, 1998 with proportion 1:2. The flag was designed by artist Georgie Vrabie.

Chişinău (Chisinau) is the name in Romanian (locally also known as Moldavian), spelt in the Latin script. There was also the same name in so called Moldavian language, which was spelt in the Cyrillic script and is now abandoned: Кишинэу. Note that this was not the Russian name of the city, which albeit also Cyrillic was spelled was a bit different: Кишинёв.
