About the flag

The district of Strășeni (82,675 inhabitants - 18,934 in urban areas and 63,741 in rural areas: 72,900 ha) is located in central Moldova, 25 km north-west of Chişinău. The district is composed of the towns of Străşeni and Bucovăţ, and another 37 villages.

Strășeni was first documented on 20 March 1545 when Voivod Alexander, ruler of Moldavia, granted half of the town to the Pobrata monastery. In the 18th century, Strășeani de pe Bîc (on river Bîc) was listed among the possessions of the Sfînta Vineri monastery in Iaşi.
The district of Strășeni was established in November 1940.

Strășeni is said to come from Romanian "straşnic", "awful, horrifying", referring to bloody battles fought there during the reign of Stephen the Great, or to rascals that terrorized people crossing the forest when heading to Chişinău, so that the place was deemed haunted. In the less violent sense of "amazing", the world can also refer to the skillful local carpenters, who produced famous canopies.

The flag of the district is rectangular (2:3), vertically divided yellow-green, with an uprooted oak countercolored, surrounded by two barrel seen from the bottom, the one on the right green and the one on the left yellow.
The flag is a banner of the arms of the district.

The current territory of the district of Străşeni was part of the medieval domains of Lăpuşna and Orhei, which were separated by river Bîc. In the modern era, the two domains were merged into the county of Lăpuşna-Orhei, subsequently the county of Orhei. The current territory of the district of Străşeni was part of this county, whose capital was Chişinău, and which was granted on 2 April 1826 a coat of arms, "Azure an oak argent on a base proper", symbolizing the abundance of forests. In 1835, the county of Orhei was split into the counties of Chişinău and Orhei, each with its capital in the homonymous town. The old coat of arms with the oak was kept for the county of Chişinău while a new coat of arms was created in 1837 for the county of Orhei, featuring on a base proper an oak (taken from the old coat of arms) flanked sinister by a scythe, which symbolized the hay fields of the county. The two coats of arms were preserved even after 1918, their heraldic design being fixed on 1 August 1928, as follows:
- county of Lăpuşna (until 1925, county of Chişinău "Gules an oak argent on a base of the same";
- county of Orhei; "Per pale, 1. Gules an oak eradicated or, 2. Gules a scythe argent". on red, an uprooted oak tree of gold, and in the second partition, also on red, a silver scythe. As for the current territory of the district of Străşeni district, it was divided between the two counties, Chişinău/Lăpuşna county receiving two thirds of it.

Keeping the oak as an historical charge in the arms of the district of Străşeni is fully justified, first of all because it was a common emblem for both historical counties and especially because the tree descended from the coat of arms from 1826, when the two counties formed a single .
The split of the field and of its main charge is related both to the two historical domains and to the two banks of river Bîc, which still today separates the district into two parts.
The choice of the oak is justified once more by the local extraordinary forest resources. The Codru nature reserve and the oak of Stephen the Great in Scoreni are also alluded to by the same charge.
The forest meaning is also reinforced by the green color, which is the color of vegetation, woods, spring, youth, beauty, freedom, health, hope and joy. Or (yellow in the flag) is the color of the sun, light, antiquity, grandeur, intelligence, prestige and virtue.

The second heraldic charge is a reference to viticulture and wine-making, as the predominant source of income in the district. A wine barrel was chosen as a charge less frequent in the heraldic designs of the Republic of Moldova than others [grapes]. The barrel, as a straightforward reference to wine making, will achieve an additional identification of the place compared to other places in the country with similar coats of arms. The wine growers, the ten wine factories, and the coopers from Scoreni will also be represented by this charge.
The barrels are represent lying down, seen from the bottom, with the corks hammered in, thus implying that the barrels are already filled with wine.
The district crown that surmounts the shield highlights the hierarchical position of the district in the administrative territorial division system of the Republic of Moldova.

The Codru / Codrii (Forest / Forests) reserve occupies was Moldova's first reserve, created by a Decision of the Council of Ministers issued on 27 September 1971. It is located in the northwestern part of the Căpriana forest massif, between the villages of Lozova, Micleuşeni, Bursuc and Drăguşeni. The reserve serves as a repository of the genetic resources of the central European forests.
The area is 5,177 ha (including 96.7% forests), to which is also added a protection zone of about 12,300 ha. About 1,000 plant species are protected in the reserve. Out of the 800 vascular species, 60 are rare, and 23 are included in the Red Book of Moldova. Many of the giant trees, over 250 years old, are protected by the state as natural monuments, the legendary one being the oak of Stephen the Great.
