The Dorling-Kindersley Pocket Flag Book [rya97] claims that at independence in 1992 Macedonia retained the red flag but added a gold star in a gold sun, which was soon changed to the "Sun of Vergina". In fact, there was no interim flag matching that description.

The flag with a red field with a yellow sun inside voided-sun motif, involving a red roundel voiding the center off a large 32-point sun to accomodate a smaller 16-point sun inside, was seen in The NBC News/Rand McNally World Atlas & Review, published in 1993. The pointed rays of the larger 32-point sun are rotated 11.25 degrees counterclockwise, so that the gaps between the rays of the smaller 16-point sun border up with 2 rays on the large sun each. The small sun has its rays as normal (like a compass).

Atlas Universal (Vox, Barcelona, 1993) shows a map for each country of the world, with basic data and the respective national flag. For Macedonia, it shows a red flag with a five-pointed blue mountain in the canton.

This flag is purely an invention of the editor of the Atlas or his source. I assume that the author of this imaginary flag most likely used the mountains from the Macedonian coat of arms.
