Coat of Arms

image from the Regulation on the Coat of Arms of the Municipality of Aguascalientes (Chapter 5)

The more commonly accepted theory behind the origin of the coat of arms is that it was designed by artist and editor Francisco Díaz de León, being adopted by resolution on 24 May 1946; it was published in the state’s official newspaper on the 9th of June. It carries a motto created by Alejandro Topete del Valle; it should be noted that the coat of arms of the state was created in the same year, of which its motto also comes from Alejandro. However, especially in previous years, the creator was believed to be Bernabé Ballesteros, who designed the coat of arms of the state, which appears to not hold true. According to a more recently adopted regulation on the coat of arms:

First Quarter - The Ionic column in gold, found in the first partition, represents the nobility of the Aguascalentenses, as it is the center and heart of the Mexican Republic. On this part, the gules field is a reminder of the generous blood spilled by our martyrs and patriots, in addition to evoking the Sovereign Revolutionary Conference which happened in this city the 10th of October to the 9th of November in 1914.

On the second partition, the silver star with five points manifests the purity of the Aguascalientes sky; like this, the azure field evokes the beauty of its nights. In short, this part alludes to the benignity of the Hidrocálido weather.

Second Quarter - The cogwheel in silver symbolizes the activity related to organized manufacturing, principally held in much of the 20th century in the capital city; meanwhile, the golden field remembers the blinding lights of its furnaces and forges found in its big factories and workshops.

Third Quarter - The pomegranate in a natural tincture remembers the variety and abundance of fruits from the orchards in the Triana neighborhood; seeing it half-open with tight and juicy grains makes reference to the strong links of friendship which build union among Aguascalentenses. The vert field confirms this concept, and at the same time alludes to the greenery of its fields and foliage of poplars with border the Pirules River.

Fourth Quarter - The bonfire in a natural tincture evokes the thermal sources which gave the origin to the name of the city: Aguas Calientes [hot waters]. This symbol is complete with the bands of blue and silver, because the waters are "clear blue", which means that they aren't transparent or green, rather a bluish color.

Inescutcheon - The border carries the number "1575", the year in which Dr. Jerónimo de Orozco, President of the Royal Audience and Chancellery of the Kingdom of New Galicia, signed the decree of the foundation of the Villa of Our Lady of the Assumption of the Hot Waters [Aguas Calientes] the 22nd of October in the city of Guadalajara, in the name of King Philip II.

The twelve golden bezants represent the first populators of the Romeros Valley, who are considered along with their respective families as the founders of the city: Juan de Montoro, Jerónimo de la Cueva, Alonso de Alarcón, Alonso de Ávalos Saavedra, Luis González, Pedro González, Juan López de Elizalde, Cristóbal Lozano, Gaspar Silva, Nicolás Ramírez, Pedro Hernández de Santa Fe, and an unknown one.

The purple tincture of the bordure praises the greatness of the action of these colonists, who were able to endure against constant depredations from the indigenous Chichimecas, which were at the point of finishing the incipient population off; at the same time it indicates liberty and sovereignty. The image of the Virgin Mary, in her mysterious glory of the Assumption, makes reference to the name with which the settlement was established...Besides this, the faith of the providential mothers, fervent Christians, as well as sweet and resigned companions is also consolidated.

Heading - The winged and lean lion which serves as the crest of the Coat of Arms is a representation of the Evangelist Saint Mark taken from the Tetramorph, and evokes the Town of Indians of San Marcos founded in the 17th century, as well as the traditional fair which since 1828 has developed in the city and evolved into the International Fair of San Marcos in its succeeding years.

Ribbon - The silver ribbon bordering the Coat of Arms carries the motto in Latin "VIRTUS IN AQUIS. FIDELITAS IN PECTORIBUS", which means "Virtue in the waters. Fidelity in the hearts"; it is a clear allusion to the therapeutic properties of the thermal waters and proverbial fidelity of the Aguascalentense hearts.
