Background

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is a federal government agency that governs and operates the ports of Nigeria. The major ports controlled by the NPA include: the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port in Lagos; Calabar Port, Delta Port, Rivers Port at Port Harcourt and Onne Port. Operations of the NPA are carried out in association with the Ministry of Transport and the Nigerian Shippers' Council. The main offices of the Nigerian Ports Authority are located in Lagos.

Nigerian Ports Authority - current flag

According to Flags of the World by EMC Barraclough and W Crampton (1981 edition) [bcr81] page 153, the flag of the Nigerian Ports Authority is green with a white disc in the centre charged with a gold [heraldic] dolphin wearing a naval crown and a chain with a gold hexagram around its neck.

The website of the Nigerian Ports Authority shows a coat of arms which appears to be used as the emblem of the organisation.

In the 1965 edition of “Flags of the World” by EMC Barraclough states “The flag of the Nigerian Ports Authority is green, proportions two to one, with a white disc in the centre occupying one-third of the hoist; this disc is charged with a green dolphin, similar to the supporters in the Arms of the Authority, but is ensigned with a naval crown in gold. Around the neck of the dolphin is a gold chain beneath which are two interlaced triangles, also in gold”.

The author would appear to have erred in his report of the size of the disc, as the text is accompanied by a black and white drawing showing the diameter as one-third of the length.

In the 1978 and 1981 editions of the same book, however, on page 153, Barraclough states, “The flag of the Ports Authority is green with a white disc in the centre charged with a gold dolphin wearing a naval crown and a chain with a gold hexagram around its neck”. Either the first report was incorrect or it may be the case that the NPA changed the central device.

Nigerian Ports Authority flag (1955 - 1960)

image by Martin Grieve, 13 April 2000

The Nigerian Ports Authority was created in 1955 when it replaced Nigerian Ports and Seaways that had been operated by the Marine Department of the Nigerian Government. The vessels of the Marine Department that had flown the Nigerian Blue Ensign now flew the Nigerian Ports Authority Blue Ensign which was granted 29 August 1955. The badge in the fly was similar to the badge on the Nigerian Blue Ensign but the circle was white instead of red, and the crown and word NIGERIA in the centre of the star were replaced by the letters NPA in gold. Return of the warrant was requested 06 November 1961, but the ensign was probably not used after October 1960.
