Hurdegaryp village (Hardegarijp)
Flag: five horizontal stripes of red, white, black, white, red, proportioned
6:1:2:1:6; in top hoist on red a yellow hunting horn with cord.
The name of the village probably means: hard area on a narrow strip
(see also Garyp). The original village was
a bit to the south. In 1830 the "black road" was lengthened, and the village
moved towards the road. Near the village some peat-digging was going on.
The colors black and white refer to that, while the black pale refers to
the black road. The red color has been taken from the arms of the municipal
division "it Burgumer Kertier", and likewise the horn, which was
originally red.
Huddegryp is now virtually a suburb of Leeuwarden; its inhabitants
are mostly working in the Frisian capital. It is near the crossroads of
"Quatre Bras", the junction of the roads from Leeuwarden to Groningen and
Dokkum to Drachten, a fact not so well known in Kollum.
