Itens village

Itens is a village in Littenseradiel municipality, Fryslân province; it used to be in the former municipality of Hennaarderadeel, with (1958) 214; (1974) 184 inhabitants. It is east of Wommels, on the road Sneek-Franeker.
Itens coat of arms: diagonally divided 1. in red a jumping horse issuing from the diagonal of silver; II. in blue a silver left diagonal fess.
Flag: following the fly-diagonal four stripes proportioned 3:1:1:1, red, blue, white and blue, with on red a white half horse.
The village church was in the Middle Ages devoted to Saint Martin. The diagonal division of flag and coat of arms refers to the coat, which that saint cut in two, of which he gave one half to a poor beggar. The silver horse symbolizes cattle-breeding in the environment, but also to the arms of the Stapert-family, which had a winged horse on its coat of arms, which owned a "sate" (stately house, not fortified, or a big farmhouse) next to the vicarage. The blue is taken from the Hennaarderadeel municipal arms and
of Littenseradiel. The diagonal stripe shows that Itens lays along the Slachtedyk.
The flag is identical to the arms.
