Koarnwertersân village
Koarnwertersân (Dutch: Korwerderzand) is a village in Wûnseradiel
municipality in the province of Fryslân, the only village on the
Afsluitdijk.
Flag: yellow, a narrow horizontal black stripe in the center; at the
hoist the narrowed municipal flag.
At the site of Koarnwertersân the Ofslútdyk has been fortified;
the black stripe in sandy soil is a barrier against fierce waves, and against
overpowering enemies (during the German invasion of May 1940 it was not
taken by the Germans).
adopted 1955; design: Kl. Sierksma
Arms: or a fess noir with in chief two erased gulls' heads in summerpride
and in base a grenade noir burning gules.
The fess again symbolizes the Ofslútdyk; the golden field the
sandbar on which the village has been built. Gulls (Larus Ridibundus)
were the first inhabitants and they are still very present. The burning
grenade reminds of the fierce fighting in May 1940 and Spring 1945.

More accurately, "Larus ridibundus", the black-headed gull, known
in French as "mouette rieuse" (laughing gull).
The "mouette rieuse" and the "chat dingue" (crazy cat)
are Gaston Lagaffe's prefered pets and assistants in his endless fight
against work and establishment. The "mouette rieuse" is particularly
efficient in dropping heavy stuff on the head of the policeman booking
Gaston and preventing Mr. De Mesmaeker from signing the famous contracts.
