Langezwaag village de facto flag
Langezwaag (Frisian: Langsweagen) is a village in Opsterland municipality
in Fryslân province. In 1998 Mr. Jelle Terluin designed several village
flags in Opsterland, and made a nasty discovery. The village of Langezwaag
had been presented with a proposal for a flag and arms in 1992; the local
society for village interests was not interested, but one year later it
awoke and adopted the arms as proposed; it adopted the flag too, but with
minor additions. In the fly-bottom the coat of arms was placed, which had the same
diagonal stripes as the flag, making it virtually invisible. Then the green
stripes were removed: no changes, because the white border nearly coincided
with the white flag stripe. Whereupon the white border was changed into
a grey border. The heart shield's main color: red, was changed in green,
and the tree became grey instead of white.
This monstrosity was produced without comment by the famous flagfactory
"Dokkumer Vlaggen Centrale".
The Fryske Rie foar Heraldyk was advised by Mr. Terluin to let the
matter rest for a while, until the moths had eaten the grey monsters,
and when all flags had died by natural causes, register the original proposal
as the official Langezwaag flag.
