Morra village (Moarre)
Flag: Diagonally divided from hoist-bottom to fly-top of yellow and blue;
in yellow a blue erased eagle's head.
Morra (Frisian: Moarre) had (1-1-1999) 247 inhabitants; it forms in
fact one village with Lioessens. In the Middle Ages there was the Norbertine
nunnery of Weerd, founded before 1326, burnt down by the 'Watergeuzen'
on 20-8-1569, closed in 1580. The diagonal division of the flag refers
to the former Oostdongeradeel coat of arms and to the road from Dokkum to Anjum
and Lauwersoog. The eagle's head is from the Van Heemstra family coat of arms, but
it also refers to the patron saint of the village - St John the Evangelist.

Morra coat of arms
by Jarig Bakker, 3 May 2004
Description: "In gold a blue pale, charged with a silver organ-pipe
with a golden labium; the pale with right in chief a blue erased eagle's
head and left in base a blue flounder (fish)".
The pale in this coat of arms is a parallel to the crossbar in arms
of Lioessens: it represents the road from
Dokkum to Lauwersoog, which passes by both villages. The arms as a whole
is kept in the counter-colors of the Van Heemstra family, from which the
eagle has been taken. The Van Heemstr arms contains a golden eagle on a
blue field. Furthermore the eagle refers to St. John the Baptist, the patron
saint of the village church. In the early Gothic church of Moarre we find
the oldest organ in Dongeradiel. The organ-pipe reminds of that. The labium
looks better in gold. For esthetic reasons the pipe has been put on the
pale. The flounder (bot) is from the coat of arms of the Botma family.
