Sijbrandahuis village (Sibrandahûs)
At this
webpage are flag and Coat of Arms of Sijbrandahuis village, in the municipality
of Dantumadiel, Fryslân.
Alex Bouma, the webmaster of the site, writes:
"The village is in north-Dantumadeel. The name consists of a Christian
name Sijbrand / Siebrand and house. Sijbrand is a composition of the German
"sig", meaning victory, "brand, meaning (flaming) sword. The name
therefore means "(flaming) sword of victory. The Nederlands Hervormde Church
of Sijbrandahuis was built in the 13th century in red brick. It is remarkable
by the special ornaments on the walls. Under the choir is a grave-cellar
of the family of Tjaerda van Starkenborch. The chevron on the flag refers
to the roof of the church, the red color to the red bricks, while the flaming
sword shows the meaning of the name
Sijbrand/sybrand. In the upper part of the coat of arms are the colors and symbols
of the arms of the family of Tjaerda van Starkenborch. This coat of arms is in or
with a sable eagle facing sinister, which has a rope in its beak holding
an or shield with a red lion. Only the heads of the eagle and lion have
been depicted as pars-pro-toto (parts for the whole). The eagle is the
king of birds and the lion the king of animals and are both very popular
as animals on arms. In the flag the red house is clearly recognizable,
and on this the flaming sword has been placed as a symbol of the name of
the village."

I decided to take a drive past the hamlet of Sijbrandahuis (its official
name still has the Dutch and not the Frisian spelling of Sibrandahûs,
as the municipality of Dantumadeel has not, as yet, joined the ever so
slowly increasing group of Frisian municipalities who have changed the
names of their towns and villages to the language they should be using:
Frisian). It consists of little more than a few farms and one or two private
homes. Its total population is 57. Its little church is described, on the
sign leading to it, as a 13th Century Monastery Chapel, probably once part
of the Claerkampster Monastery. It is about 7 kilometres from my home in
Wânswert.
