Scheemda municipality
Population (1 Jan 2003): 14.375; area: 117,17 km². Settlements: Scheemda
(seat), Heiligerlee, Midwolda, Nieuwolda, Nieuw-Scheemda, Oostwold, 't
Waar, Westerlee.
Scheemda is in east Groningen, a few km. northwest of Winschoten. Since
1990 it includes the municipalities of Midwolda and Nieuwolda. It includes
the village of Heiligerlee, where we suffered one of our most glorious
defeats by the Spaniards in 1568. Scheemda and Midwolde had national fame
for the casting of clocks.
Flag: two dented stripes proportioned 1:2, yellow and red, the yellow
stripe with three complete and two half dent and charged with five blue
6-pointed stars, placed three at the hoist and two at half height next
to them.
Adopted 29 Aug 1991 by municipal resolution.
The stars have been taken from the arms of the former municipality
of Midwolda, and may represent the Ursus Major stellar constellation.

Scheemda old flag
by Jarig Bakker, 8 Apr 2005
Adopted 12 Jul 1966
Scheemda's old flag was: a square blue flag with in the center a sword
pointed downwards, with on each side a trowel pointing upwards.
Adopted 12 Jul 1966 by municipal resolution.
The flag is an adaptation of the former municipal arms, which are based
on the Biblical book Nehemia, 4: 17: The porters did their job with one
hand, and in the other hand held a javelin.
The Coat of Arms was granted 1661 to Nieuw Scheemda by Mayors and Aldermen of
the city of Groningen, because the church of Nieuw Scheemda separated
from the church of Scheemda in 1659. The new church was built with great
difficulty. This symbol of warhaft building was later adopted by the municipality
of Scheemda.
In 1990 the former municipalities of Midwolda, Nieuwolda and Scheemda
merged to form the new municipality of Scheemda, which adopted a new flag
and Coat of Arms.
