Susteren is in Limburg province at its narrowest, hemmed in between Belgium and Germany. It is most famous as the place where King Swentibold died, and is buried in the city's basilica. Swentibold was the bastard son of Arnulf of Carinthia, who was king of Eastern Francia 887-899, as successor of Karel de Dikke; Arnulf wanted to rule over Lorraine and Northern Italy; he was crowned emperor by Pope Formosus on 2 Feb 896, the last emperor of the Carolingian dynasty. He defeated the
Vikings in Leuven (be, 891).
Swentibold (or Zwentibold) (871-900) was appointed by his dad King of Lorraine (a kingdom especially created for him); he married in 879 (!) Ota, daughter of Count Otto; he died while fighting his main vassals.

The flag of Susteren is: three equally wide horizontal stripes of blue and white, with at the hoist over all a yellow lion with red tong and nails, and at the center of the fly of the white stripe two connected blue lozenges. This flag was adopted 27 Aug 1984.

Nieuwstadt had a flag: three equally wide horizontal stripes yellow - white - blue; in the canton a green aldertree with three branches. Adopted 12 Jul 1961.
The area where Nieuwstadt now is was formerly known as "Elsene", because it was covered with alder-trees. In 1263 the settlements received city-rights, and was then named "Neye Stadt" (new town).
