Municipal flag

Halderberge is a merger between the former municipalities of Hoeven, Oud en Nieuw Gastel and Oudenbosch (1 Jan 1997).
The flag was adopted by municipal resolution on 29 May 1997. Description: A hoist of three stripes, white with a red castle, green with a white duck, and white with a green tree; and a fly with three stripes red - white - green.
The municipality has an area of 7500 ha, with 29.750 inhabitants, living in Oudenbosch (seat), Bosschenhoofd, Hoeven, Oud Gastel, and Stampersgat. The name of "Halderberge" refers to a deed of the Lord of Breda on 6 December 1298 about the "Goed van Halderberge" concerning all former municipalities, which now form the new one. The origin of the name is uncertain.

The flag with the red top-fly stripe is the official flag. The one with the green stripe was probably a mistake made during the designing of the flag after the municipal reorganisation in 1997, and started to have a life of its own.
Marcel Deelen, Halderbergen municipal office, 12 May 2003

In the past weekend I saw with my own eyes the flag with the red-white-green fly in front of the municipal building! In the official municipal resolution it was indeed stated: "green-white-green", but that was an error. Meant was really: red-white-green, probably in reference to the many ties between the municipal seat of Oudenbosch and Rome (Italy). The Basilica of the Holy Agatha & Barbara of Oudenbosch (80 m. high and with a cupola of 68 m.) was built after the model of the St. Peter basilica in Rome; This basilica was built between 1865 and 1892. The initiative to build this basilica was taken by Father Hellemons, who was fascinated by the buildings of the Vatican. He managed to persuade over 3,000 Oudenbosch citizens to participate in this project and he built his Basilica. In front of the church is a monument in remembrance to the 3.000 "Zoeaven" (Zouaves, volunteers, who fought for the Pope against Italy between 1867 and 1870), who left for Rome from Oudenbosch between 1860 and 1870. The "Kapel van Saint Louis" (Chapel of Saint Louis) is reminiscent of the St Peter’s in Rome, also built by Father Hellemons.

The municipal council's resolution settles the matter: so the flag is green-white-green. Should they want to use a red-white-green flag a new resolution has to be taken. This has happened for instance in Liempde (Noord-Brabant).
I don't believe that in the case of Halderberge the Italian colors have been meant. The ties of Oudenbosch via the Zouaves concern the Vatican, and around 1870 the State of Italy was an adversary of the Pope.
Hans van Heijningen, 14 May 2003

On 17 Feb 2005 the municipal council confirmed that it had adopted the Red - White - Green flag on 29 May 1997.

Halderberge Coat of Arms

Adopted by municipal resolution on 8 Sep 1997. This Coat of Arms is derived from the merger of the three Coats of Arms of the former municipalities of Hoeven, Oudenbosch and Oud en Nieuw Gastel. The trees, from the Oudenbosch arms, allude to the origin of that municipality: the Baerlebosch. The three ducks are from the arms of Gastel. The castle of Hoeven is possibly connected to the arms of the city of Antwerpen, the bishop of which held spiritual and worldly power over Hoeven.

The Oudenbosch arms were granted 28 Feb 1816; In 1986 research revealed that the original heraldic colors were green and silver. In 1816 that was apparently not known, so the national colors (Belgium was then included in the Netherlands).
