On 19 Nov 2005 Stefan Lambrechts reported this gem from this
site to the Benevex-list.
The former municipality of Sint Pancras is now part of Langendijk,
just north of Alkmaar. It has now again its
own flag, a white cloth with:
..een dravend paard in het groene gras, is het wapen van Sint Pancras....
a cantering horse in the green grass is the arms of Sint Pancras
Since 15 Oct 2005 this flag can be bought at the Readshop Soorsma in
St. Pancras. An anonymous villager got carried away with the project, and
made a deal with an anonymous flagmaker, so that the independent existence
of the village could be ensured.
(Note: the official name of the village is Sint Pancras; it is unknown
why the name appears differently on the flag).
Actually the village is virtually part of Alkmaar. It is said that it
was originally the mighty town of Vroonen, which disappeared at the end
of the 13th century by another incursion of the (West-)Frisians. Only the
stone remnants of the church were left. Sadly out of its own accord it
crashed in 1303. It is not known why the brown horse was adopted for the
municipal arms - it would have made more sense if St. Catherine had been
placed on it, as 25 Nov is her festival day, on which children get Sint
Katrijn-poppen (gingerbread-women).
