Hardenberg Coat of Arms

[Hardenberg coat of arms] image from Ralf Hartemink's website.

In January 2001 the municipalities of Hardenberg, Avereest and Gramsbergen were merged. This merger made the old municipal arms redundant. A new Coat of Arms was presented to the municipal council on 19 Dec 2002.

The design of the new Coat of Arms was made by Mr. Bultsma from Kollum (Fr). The arms are very recognizable, new, and not derived from the old Coats of Arms. We wanted to get the symbolism of our region on the arms. Our region is enclosed by the rivers Reest and Vecht, which have been rendered as blue wavy bars. The clover consist of three leaves, symbolizing the old municipalities.

Clover was also chosen because that is synonymous with rural territory, and symbolizes unity. The red color of the clover is to signify that Hardenberg is not only "green". The High Council of Nobility fixed the colors of the stones in the crown, which originally belonged to the municipality of Gramsbergen, but as its successor the Hardenberg municipality was entitled to it as well. In the crown the jems "Spinel" (the red stones) and "Saffiere" (the blue ones) were used.

Official description: "In or two fesses azure, with in the center a cloverleaf gules. The shield surmonté with a crown or of five leaves".

Gramsbergen unofficial flag

[Gramsbergen unofficial flag] by Jarig Bakker, 19 May 2003

Gramsbergen is a former municipality, now part of Hardenberg municipality in Overijssel province in the Netherlands.
A little known fact is that Crimea used to be part of Gramsbergen. While the Crimea-war was raging, the exploitation of the area north of Gramsbergen was taking place. The laborers had a hard time, but when they were resting their life-style was not at all to the liking of the decent Gramsbergen citizens: "It looks like the Crimea-war is waged over there"! That is how the village of "De Krim" got its name.

Gramsbergen is in northeast Overijssel, and became 1 Jan 2001 part of Hardenberg. It consisted of the villages of Gramsbergen and De Krim, and the hamlets Ane, Anevelde, Anerveen, Den Velde, Holthone, Holtheme and Loozen.

According to Sierksma's Nederlands Vlaggenboek, 1962 [sie62] there was a flag: "Blue, with three yellow circles, placed 2 and 1.
That flag was not official, but was used as such. The flag was identical to the municipal Coat of Arms."
It was probably in use until 18 Apr 1977, when the new one was adopted.
