Nieuwegein municipality
Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 62.151; area: 25,65 km². Settlements:
Nieuwegein (seat).
Nieuwegein was formed on 1 Jul 1971 by the merger of the former municipalities
of Jutphaas and Vreeswijk. It has grown rapidly in a rather big city, actually
a southern suburb of the city of Utrecht.
Nieuwegein city flag
The new city flag of Nieuwegein will appear for the first time on Koninginnedag
(Queen's Birthday, 30 Apr 2003). The Mayor, C. de Vos, will hoist that
day one of the new city flags at the start of the festivities. Platform
Vreeswijk and Scouting Vreeswijk will hoist the second flag.
On the flag the arms of Nieuwegein have been simplified. The Coat of Arms shows
a silver castle with three towers on a red field, and below that eight
wavy bars of silver and azure. On top of the shield is a golden crown.
After consultation of the High Council of Nobility the castle has been
simplified to one white castle on a red field. The wavy bars are white
and blue. Proportions: 2:3.
It is for the first time that Nieuwegein gets a city flag based on
the municipal arms. The introduction of a new house-style seemed the appropriate
moment to have a real city flag produced for special occasions and city-promotion.

This flag was not official and was seldom used. The colors are the
so-called Jutphaasse kleuren, derived from the municipal arms.
The municipal council uses its own flag: a white field on which the
municipal arms have been embroidered.

The flag of Vreeswijk is still used - I just saw it on a ship nearby!
