Ouderkerk aan den IJssel flag
Ouderkerk aan den IJssel is a former municipality in Zuid-Holland province,
since 1985 part of the new municipality of Ouderkerk.
Flag: five wavy stripes of white and blue, proportioned 1:1:3:1:1 with
on the central stripe at the hoist three black crescents in a horizontal
row, pointing towards the hoist.
adopted by municipal resolution 30 Oct 1972.
Arms: argent three crescents noir, turned dexter.
Granted 24 Jul 1816
The crescents are derived from the arms of the Van Polanen family,
which was related to the Wassenaar (= crescent) family.
Ouderkerk a/d IJssel is in the Krimpenerwaard, opposite Capelle aan
den IJssel. It has a 15th century church with the family-vault of the Counts
of Nassau-Ouwerkerk.
Nickname: "Klokkedieven" - Once upon a time the Ouderkerkers
and Ridderkerkers ordered both a new churchbell. Both bells were delivered
at the same time, but the Ouderkerker bell was a bit dented. They got the
bells exchanged, for which the Ridderkerkers were rewarded with a ham.
Nevertheless the Ouderkerkers stayed "Bell-thieves" ever since...
