Standard of Queen Juliana

Juliana was Queen of the Netherland 1948-1980. In that time she used the Royal Standard. Her full name was: Juliana Louise Emma Marie Wilhelmina, koningin der Nederlanden (1948-1980), prinses der Nederlanden, prinses van Oranje-Nassau, hertogin van Mecklenburg. She was the daughter of Prins Hendrik van Mecklenburg and Queen Wilhelmina.

Standard of Princess Juliana

Princess Juliana by Mark Sensen, 31 Mar 2004
Adopted 8 November 1909, 23 April 1980

Description: An orange field, swallow-tailed with a cross of Nassau blue. In the canton the hunting horn of the Orange family; in the bottom hoist a black bull's head with white horns, red tongue and a golden crown (Mecklenburg).
On 30 April 1980 Queen Juliana of the Netherlands abdicated in favour of her daughter Beatrix. Juliana then became a Princess again, and reverted to the flag she had used before ascending the throne. This is like the flag used by Princess Beatrix, but with a black bull's head, representing Mecklenburg, in the lower hoist canton. The father of the former Queen was Prince Hendrik of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, consort to Queen Wilhelmina.

Princess Juliana, formerly Queen of the Netherlands, has died on Saturday, 20 Mar 2004.
Miles George Ka-chun Li, Sydney, Australia, 22 Mar 2004

She died at the age of 94; after her funeral she became formally Queen Juliana again - she reigned 1948-1980 and became a symbol of peace. In 1949 three important Nazi-officials were sentenced to death. Juliana was in 1952 asked to sign the execution order - and she flatly refused! "There has been enough bloodshed because of this war". The "Drie van Breda" (3 of Breda) were then sentenced to life-imprisonment. In the 1960's there were a lot of anti-monarchist riots (relletjes) in Amsterdam, and it is known that she saved several rioters from all too enthusiastic clobbering policemen...
Jarig Bakker, 22 Mar 2004

The Dutch seem to want only one Queen alive at a time, it appears.
Bill Dunning, 23 Mar 2004

The principle is: "The King/Queen is dead, long live the King/Queen!" After her abdication Queen Juliana was technically dead, becoming an ordinary citizen. Like her mother, Wilhelmina, she chose to become a Princess; The first king of the Orange dynasty, Willem I, chose to become the "Count of Nassau" after his abdication in 1840. In Dutch perception the ex-monarchs have to be buried before they become King/Queen again.
Jarig Bakker, 23 Mar 2004

After her abdication in 1948 Wilhelmina herself chose to be Princess instead of Queen-Mother, and it seems Juliana did the same 32 years later. From 1890 till 1934 there were two Dutch Queens however: Queen Wilhelmina and her mother Queen Emma, who was Queen-Widow Regent from 1890 (when King Willem III died) till 1898 (when Wilhelmina came of age), and
Queen-Mother from then on.
Mark Sensen, 23 Mar 2004

I went to Den Haag to pay my respects to the deceased queen. In front of her coffin was a small bench with a cushion displaying Princess Juliana's flag. The bull's head in the bottom hoist was nearly completely grey/silver.
Jarig Bakker, 23 Mar 2004

The flag with the grey bull's head was "de facto". It was also used for the combined flag for Juliana and Bernhard
Gerard van der Vaart, 31 Mar 2004
