"The Nedlloyd markings are themselves of interest. Since 1963, two major
Dutch shipping companies had run joint services under this title. For vessels
regularly on these services, the basic funnel colours of the partners were
retained, the buff with black top of N.V. Stoomvaartmaatschappij "Nederland"
of Amsterdam, in use since the firm was formed in 1871, and the plain black
of Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd, of Rotterdam.
To them was added the Nedlloyd emblem, sometimes as
roundel, sometimes within a diamond shape, at a height which interrupted
the black top of the buff funnel. Ships often retained their owner's houseflag,
but on occasion flew the Nedlloyd blue flag. From this
partnership, closer links blossomed with Royal Interocean Lines (KJPCL)
and Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaartmaatschappij
(the holding company formed in 1908), and in 1969 the firms merged to form
Nederlandse Scheepvaart Unie. Thus a holding company
with interests which ranged from liner services and tankers, to bulk carriers
and coastal craft, was created which covered a host of greater and lesser
companies. No fundamental change in markings was made at the time of the
merger, though ships within the group began to fly the N.S.U.
pennant, superior to their owner's houseflag. About 1970, the principal
liner services of the group were combined under the title of Koninkijke
Nedlloyd N.V., of Rotterdam and this consisted of the fleets of "Nederland",
Rotterdamsche Lloyd, and N.V. Vereenigde
Nederlandsche Scheepvaartmaatschappij of The Hague. New markings were
adopted, in which the colour scheme of the last-named predominated. They
were not to last for very long, however, for in 1977, the parent company
altered its title from N.S.U. to Koninkijke
Nedlloyd Groep, and a new houseflag was adopted, eventually to replace,
with the funnel mark, the existing markings of every shipping concern within
the group."

Jan Mertens reported this link
with mainly Dutch houseflags. P&O Nedlloyd - flag quartered orange
and blue (top = c. 1/4 flagheight; hoist is c. 1/3 flagwidth), in top hoist
"P&O", in top fly "Nedlloyd". The site has red, but shows a long pennant
(consisting only of the top) with clearly orange.

Something just stumbled upon – a site
showing Dutch advertising (posters, brochures, etc.) concerning famous
shipping companies, put together by Hidde Baanstra. There I encountered
a company - NV
Nedlloyd Lijnen (Lines) - I had never heard of and a flag I had never
seen: Dark blue field, white ring surrounding white initials ‘NLL’. According
to above page (check out the various posters), this was a joint effort
of Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd NV, Rotterdam
and NV Stoomvaart Maatschappij “Nederland”,
Amsterdam (nineteen sixties).
The idea was to thoroughly enjoy a sea voyage on board of cargo ships
headed for the Far East or Oceania via the Red Sea.
