Texels Eigen Stoomboot Onderneming (Texels Own Steamboat Enterprise) was
founded in 1907. It operates the ferry service between the Island of Texel and
the province North Holland. Departing from the port of Den Helder (also a naval
base) the vessels sail to the small ferry port Den Horn on the island. The
company was founded by locals on the island, encouraged by their general
practitioner doctor Adriaan Wagemaker. The islanders where not satisfied with
the than existing ferry service operated by another company on the mainland. Up
till now the company is still owned by ca 3100 inhabitants of the island who own
the shares of the company. In 2007, the company celebrated its centennial and
was awarded with the title Koninklijke. (Royal). So today the official name of
the company is Koninklijke Texels Eigen Stoomboot Onderneming. This event
inspired the company to create a new house flag. The original colours of the
flag, black and green were based on the flag of the island. The coat of arms of
the island were also depicted on the funnels of the ferries in the 1970s.
