Flag of Nasjonal Samling

Quisling's party, Nasjonal Samling (National Unity), had a Scandinavian cross flag of red field and yellow cross. All the various specialised organisations within the party (Hird, women's and youth organisations etc.) also had flags. These were based on the party emblem, the sun cross, a red disc with a yellow cross. The emblem was put on a plain field. Each organisation had a different colour.
Jan Oskar Engene, 11 April 1996

The party flag of Nasjonal Samling was in proportions 10:16, the cross being equal to 2 parts, the red rectangles at the hoist were 4 parts by 5 and those at the free end of the flag 4 parts by 9. In other words, the party flag design had proportions different from those of the national flag of Norway.
The Nasjonal Samling party flag seems to have been in use from the party was set up in 1933 until the liberation of Norway 8. May 1945.

From the Norwegian Wikipedia entry on Nasjonal Samling, the Norwegian Fascist party: http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasjonal_Samling the complete scan of the 1944 party yearbook can be accessed:

The interesting part of this book is at pp. 135-144, where the variety of party flags are described. Hopefully the FOTWers who speak Norwegian will be able to present the content to us - as much as I was able to understand, there is quite a number of flags still not presented at the FOTW-ws.
Tomislav Todorović, 08 July 2014

My translation may include slight errors, one problem is fylking, which I translated as district. Like SS and SA in Germany the patry militias (hirden = the guard) had their own ranks and subdivisions. Probably my translation is false. See also p. 124 of the manual. If a hirden-regiment is really a regiment, then we would have subdivisions of the militia as follows:
Regiment (= regiment) Nestregiment (= battalion, lit.: viceregiment), fylking (=company), sveit (= platoon), nestsveit (= squad(?), lit.: viceplatoon) , tropp (= troop).
Sorry, but I have a very poor Norwegian dictionary, and partially all seems to be party jargon.
Klaus-Michael Schneider, 09 July 2014

Though I tried to just include the errors of the original, I expect that I've occasionally added new ones. The brave soul who goes through these one at a time is advised to check. The names of the units, appear to have been chosen to be militaristic and ancient Norwegian. As we already translate the Norwegian "Fylke" as "County", I had to translate the others as well, though there is a loss in translation, here: I would have used "group", rather than "section", as a good indication of the smallest unit, but unfortunately, that seemed to have a different military meaning. Not having group, using "troop" didn't seem to fit either, etc.

FLAGS AND BANNERS

[Drawing of a sun cross]

The sun cross [solkorset] is a golden wheel on a red field. The separate parts are in the following ratios to each other:
When the diameter is 20, then the width of the spokes at the centre 3 : 20. The width of the spokes at the outer ring 4 : 20. The width of the ring: 1 : 20. The widening of the spokes starts at a distance from the inside of the ring of 2 : 20. For all flags, the sun cross' internal ratio's are the same. Therefore, from now on just the diameter will be given.

[Drawing of a sun cross with two upright swords under the spokes]

The sun cross with swords. The sun cross: Usual ratios. Swords: Length: 14 : 20. Width: 0.75 : 20. Distance from the centre: 4 : 20. Handle: length 4 : 20. Width: 0.75 : 20. Distance from the covering sun wheel's midline through the centre 4 : 20. The widening of the sword is a square, the diagonal of which is 1.5 : 20. The handle should have a small widening at its ends.
