Bømlo municipality is situated in Hordaland county.
The flag of Bømlo, a white water lily on red, was approved by Royal
resolution 29 February 1980 and was designed by Magnus Hardeland. When making a
flag for hoisting, the proportions of the national flag (8:11) were chosen.
Decorative concerns were the main reason for choosing the design, but the water
lily grows in the many small lakes of the municipality. Also, the trefoil
represents the three municipalities of Bremnes, Moster and Bømlo that were
united into one municipality in 1963.

[cjo87] mentions that the water lily leaf is
one of the oldest Norwegian heraldic charges (I presume, not only Norwegian),
nearly identical form of the leaf as shown on p. 135 of [neu88] on a 1690 plate by Ph. J. Spener. There the
leaf is captioned Nymphoea, and said it was borne by Seebach family.
