Description and history of the flag

On red a yellow branch of holly. That is the flag of the municipality of Stord (in the county of Hordaland). Holly (Ilex Aquiofolium), with its shiny evergreen leaves and red berries, is much used for Christmas decorations, in Norway as elsewhere. It is called Christ's Thorn in Norwegian (though that name refers to a different plant in English). The flag of Stord was approved by Royal Resolution of 19 June 1987. The designer was Truls Nygaard. No official proportions have been set. The image conforms to the heraldic description of the flag.

Blazon

Official blazon in Norwegian: "På raud grunn ein gul kristtorn-kvist."
Blazoned in English: "Gules a holly branch or."
English blazon by Željko Heimer, 5 August 2002

As it is shown on http://www.ngw.nl/heraldrywiki/index.php?title=Stord and issued in [c2j87] there was another one that Stord municipal government adopted on 3 December 1955, after a drawing by Magnus Hardeland, however, it had not received the royal approval. From ngw site "The chevron in the arms is derived from the arms of the Smør family, who used a chevron in their arms. The family was an important noble family in the 14th and 15th century in Norway. They originated from the area. The flame symbolises the old industries in the village." [c2j87] notes that the decision was made to get an approvable design, and by [c2j88] it was approved and included in it.
Regarding the current arms - the presentation at the county archives mentions also that the Truls Nygaard design was after an original idea by Harry Herstad.
