Presentation of Porirua

The City is located north of New Zealand’s capital extending from Tawa in the south to Paekakariki in the north, from Titahi Bay on the coast to Hutt Valley in the east.

The City is easily accessible as it is straddles State Highway 1 and the main trunk line north, and only 20 minutes drive from a market of over 460,000 people, the port of Wellington and an international airport.

Its diverse population of about 50,600 boasts one of the highest, average household income in New Zealand and a per capita income well above the New Zealand average.

Porirua is one of the four cities that make up the greater Wellington urban area: Wellington, Porirua, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt. It lies to the north of Wellington city, from which it is separate by a range of steep hills traversed by State Highway 1.

The city surrounds a moderately sized natural harbour on the Tasman Sea coast - this stretch of coastline, extending north from Porirua, is known as the Kapiti Coast, after Kapiti Island, the larger of two small islands which lie off it - the smaller of the two islands, Mana Island, lies close to Porirua (both islands are nature reserves).

The city serves as a major commuter city for Wellington, with many of its residents travelling over the hills to the capital to work.

City flags

Porirua City Council flags were adopted by Council on 30 September 1998 with the Coat of Arms for formal occasions and without the Coat of Arms for less formal occasions such as usage by Porirua City based organisations. The flags also incorporate the land and sea theme similar to that depicted in the city logo.

The photos [on the city site] are cut off, leaving the exact dimensions uncertain.

We can say that this flag is based on the coat of arms, just like Czech and Dutch civic flags usually are.
