Overview

The District municipality of Llapa (5,576 inhabitants in 2005; 13,268 ha; elevation, 2,500-4,000 m asl), founded on 2 January 1857, is located in the San Miguel Province, Cajamarca Region, northern Peru. Originally located in the Chota Province, Llapa was transferred on 24 August 1870 into the Hualgayoc Province and on 29 September 1964 (Law No. 15152) into the newly formed San Miguel Province. Most probably founded by the local tribe of Illapas, the settlement was transformed in 1571 by the Spanish colonists into the Indian "reduction" (village) of San Andrés de Llapa.

The Flag

The flag of Llapa, as well as the municipal arms and anthem, was  designed by Pr. Juan Hernando Becerra Suárez; it was officially inaugurated on 7 June 2003. The flag is blue with the municipal shield in the middle.

The coat of arms of Llapa, designed in 1991, is made of a shield  divided into three quarters outlined in golden yellow. The crest of the shield is made of three stylized sun rays - recalling a possible etymology of the place name, meaning "ray, light" in Quechua - lighting three brown gold-bearing mounts - symbolizing mining - flanked by two flowers of "cantuta" - the national flower of Peru (_Cantua buxifolia_ Lam., aka the Inca's Flower). The shield is flanked by the national flag of Peru (dexter) and a palm (sinister), symbolizing the love of motherland and eternal peace, respectively. The upper left quarter shows on a blue background a bovine's head, symbolizing cattle-breeding. The upper right quarter shows on a white background a yellow maize cob, symbolizing agriculture. The lower field shows on a red background a yellow cogwheel, symbolizing industry, an open book, representing knowledge. A white cross placed over the three fields represents the Catholic faith.
A photo taken in 2009 during the Llapa festival ("feria") confirms the flag as light blue, in proportions 1:2, with the coat of arms of the middle.
