Overview

The District municipality of Máncora (8,570 inhabitants in 2005; 100 sq. km), founded on 14 November 1908, is located in the Province of Talara, Region of Piura, northern Peru. Originally and still a fishers' village, Máncora, self-styled "The Paradise of South America" is a potential tourists' hotspot. Its long beach is highly prized by surfers, who have been running there since 2007 the "Máncora Peru Classic". Sofía Mulanovich, aka "The Peruvian Sensation" and "LA Gringa", today one of the best surfers in the world (World Champion in 2004), won the competition in 2009. The road-movie "Máncora", shot in 2008 by the Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil and starring Elsa Pataky and Jason Day, was part of the official selection at the 2008 Sundance Festival..

The flag

The flag of Máncora, designed in 1995 by Engineer Manuel Casanova López, then Mayor of the District, is vertically divided bluish ("azulino") - white - blueish, with the municipal shield in the middle. The bluish colour represents the sea and the sky. The white colour represents the calm and peaceful characters of the inhabitants of Máncora.
The "singular and picturesque" emblem of Máncora, designed by the painter Luis Alberto Castro Guerrero, was adopted on 9 October 1991. The emblem is made of a shield, surmonted by a cruciferous crown symbolizing the Roman Catholic religion and flanked by two swordfishes, recalling that Máncora was officially listed among the "main fishing ports in Peru". A yellow scroll, bordered red, placed under the shield, is charged with the black writing "DISTRITO DE MANCORA / LEY N° 818-14-11-1908", recalling the foundation of the district.
The shield is divided into three "landscaped" fields:
- the upper left quarter shows a surfer in action, recalling that Máncora is a "Tourism Development Pole in Northern Peru":
- the upper right quarter shows a green carob tree in a mountainous environment, symbolizing biodiversity, lit by the sun;
- the lower quarter shows a local fishing boat symbolizing the traditional activity of Máncora
