This is the flag (proporzec) of the President of Poland, scanned and
edited from the Monitor Polski, No. 14, Poz. 178 (1996),
containing the various Polish naval and MOD flags. The basic design
is the same contained in various flag books going back
before World War II--a red field with the white eagle within an ornate
white border.
Joseph McMillan, 20 Oct 1999
This flag was abandoned 1927. Established 1 August 1919 by Sejm as "Choragiew
Rzeczypospolitej" (Banner of the Republic) was practically personal flag
of Naczelnik Panstwa. Naczelnik Panstwa ("Chief of State") was provisional
head of Republic of Poland since 22 November 1918. The office of Naczelnik
Panstwa was performed by Józef Pilsudski. The Constitution of 17 March
1921 established the office of President instead of Naczelnik Panstwa.
First President was elected 9 December 1922 and then this flag became a
flag of President. Eagle on this flag is provisional COA from 1919. It
has classicistic design, patterned after COA from reign of King
Stanislaw August Poniatowski 1764-1795 (Last COA of Polish state before
loss of independence). The new (almost identical as contemporary) COA was
established by President 13 December 1927, so this flag was abandoned.
