The arms are Or between two towers Sable a sweet chestnut tree Vert trunked and eradicated Sable and on a bordure Sable eight chestnut Or open (see left image above) or closed (see right image above). Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters"VILA DE ALIJÓ".

Alijó municipality had 14 320 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 19 communes covering 297,57 km². It is part of Vila Real District, traditional province and 1999 ref. adm. region Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte and NUTS III Douro.
