It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red field.

Shield or, a castle gules open and lit of the same charged with an inescutcheon charged with Portugal Ancient, the castle standing on a mound vert over a base wavy of Argent and Azure, on which sails a ship or rigged argent and flagged with a banner Argent, bearing a rec cross patty voided, in dexter and sinister chief a cross fleury fitchy Gules. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE ALCÁCER DO SAL".
Meaning:
The name means «Fortress of the Salt». The castle is a canting element. The waves are referring to local river Sado. The crosses are alluding to the Order of St. James (chief) and the Christ Knights Order (on ship's flag).

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Alcácer do Sal municipality had 14 050 inhabitants in 1990, and it is divided in four communes, covering 1040 km². It belongs to the Setúbal District and to the old province of Baixo Alentejo.
