About the Flag

Not surprisingly, the flag is green with coat of arms in the centre.

The coat of arms has a 4-towered mural crown, a scroll reading "VILA DE AVIS" and a shield, as always. The shield has a green Avis cross on a white (probably silver in the official description) background, and an inescutcheon centred in the cross. The inescutcheon is charged with a black eagle over a tree (probably a cork-oak) proper on a golden background. In a different source, the scroll comes with the inscription "CÂMARA MUNICIPAL DE AVIS" and in a very light yellow instead of white.

Version without Coat of Arms

Plain (monocoloured) Portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have variations without arms: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Presentation of Avis

Avis today, is a small town by the Maranhão dam, that belongs to the Portalegre district, old province of Alto Alentejo, and possible future region of Alentejo. Historically, though, it’s a very important place, since in the middle ages, it was the headquarters of one of the most important military orders of portuguese history, that even gave birth to one of the 4 portuguese dynasties: the Order of Avis. Today’s municipality has an area of 605,6 km² and a little over 5500 inhabitants, distributed in 6 communes. The economy is, as far as I know, very rural.
