Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case serifed letters "SANTA MARIA MAIOR - CHAVES".

Santa Maria Maior was one of the 30 communes of Chaves Municipality not affected by the 2013 changes ; it had 11 408 inhabitants in 2021 and covers 5,63 km². It contains mostly the central and southern urban area of Chaves city, the northern borough of Cocanha being the separate former commune of Santa Cruz/Trindade, joined to Sanjurge in 2012.
