About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a black and white quartered background (town rank). Flag and arms adopted by law published in the official journal Diário do Governo : II Série in 1948.08.04.

The coat of arms is argent on a mound vert issuant from a base wavy argent and vert a cormorant sable holding a fish gules under a goshawk sable lined or displayed in chief holding an escutcheon azure charged with five plates. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CORVO".
António Martins, 16 Dec 2006

Corvo, by the way, means "crow", which makes the coat of arms semi-canting.

Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have armless variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Some sources of the early 1990ies shown the coat of arms on a gyronny background, possibly black and white, but presented in line-draw. This might have been a mistake, as there are no movement supporting the upgrade of Vila do Corvo to city status.

Presentation of Corvo

Area: 17 km2. Population: 387 inhabitants.
Francisco Santos, 05 Mar 2003

The territory of this municipality coincides with the namesake azorean island; 487 inhabitants in 2000 (of which 399 are permanent residents; Corvo by far the least populated Portuguese municipality); one single commune. The municipal and communal seat (and single collective settlement) is the town of Vila do Corvo.
António Martins, 16 Dec 2006

Apart from the goshawk, another bird that has some meaning in azorean toponymy and vexillology is the Crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax aristotelis), in portuguese Corvo-do-mar-preto (meaning "black sea crow") — which gave the name to the smallest and NW-most island and shows in its flag.
António Martins, 14 Sep 1999
