Coat of arms

[Bobadela (Loures) commune CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 24 May 2009

The arms are Purpure a jester head, i.e. a mask, Or and a cogwheel Gules fimbriated Argent in fess and in chief a Marian crown Or between two olive branches Argent fruited sable and in base wavy Argent two barrulets wavy Azure. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "BOBADELA - LOURES".
Meaning:
"Bobadela" means "small vault" (arch. dim. of "abóbada") and thus the arms are not directly canting. However, popular etymology derives the toponym from "_bobo_", "jester", and in the one of the towns oldest houses is emblazoned with an armorial stone featuring a jester head, which was included in both versions of the arms - making them partly canting. (The said house includes also the vault on which the town was originally named, curiously enough.)

These previous arms, used in the late 1990ies, could not be approved by the heraldic authority (CHAAP), due to divisions of the shield (considered as marshalling) banned by the applicable law. Traces of its use are still visible in loc.
