Introduction of Duas Igrejas

Like all toponyms in the municipality, this commune has two names: Duas Igrejas in Portuguese and Dues Eigreijas in Mirandese (the local syncretic Asturian-Leonese dialect complex, co-official language of Portugal and given a standard orthography); each is the translation of the other and both mean "two churches". The names in brackets are Mirandese, the local language.

About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red field.

Coat of arms

Shield Or two lozenges Sable set in fess, in chief a sheaf of five ears of rye Vert tied Gules, in base a pair of dancing strikesticks Azure per saltire, each tied Gules. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "DUAS IGREJAS - MIRANDA DO DOURO". In spite of the bilingual status (enshrined in the Constitution of 1999), the scroll of the CoA is not bilingual, according to the law (signed in 2003).
Meaning:
The meaning of the name is not featured on the CoA — non-canting arms for a toponym with a clear meaning made of everyday words. Also not featured on the arms any reference to what made this village well known in the whole country throughout the 20th century: It being the eternally temporary terminus of the metre gauge railway Linha do Sabor, from 1938 to 1988, which would have linked Miranda to the rest of the country by rail. Instead featured on the arms are the sticks used in the local traditional dance, also used in the communal arms of Miranda do Douro, and references to local agriculture (sheaf) and coal mining (black lozenges).
